In 2024, Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) achieved a significant milestone by handling approximately 54.8 million passengers. This represents a 6.3% increase over the previous year and a 19.41% rise compared to per-pandemic levels in 2019.

A notable trend during this period was the substantial growth in passenger traffic to Southeast Asia. Destinations such as Singapore, Bangkok, and Koala Lumpur emerged as the most popular among travelers from Mumbai. This surge is largely attributed to the relaxation of visa policies, which made travel to these countries more accessible. 

According to CSMIA, the airport currently offers connectivity to five Southeast Asian countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam—through 133 weekly flights. This extensive network has undoubtedly contributed to the increased passenger flow to the region. 

The relaxation of visa policies has played a pivotal role in this growth. Eased visa requirements and streamlined application processes have encouraged more travelers to explore these Southeast Asian destinations. This development not only benefits tourists but also bolsters economic and cultural ties between the regions.

In summary, the combination of improved connectivity and favorable visa policies has led to a remarkable increase in passenger traffic from Mumbai to Southeast Asia. As travel continues to rebound, further enhancements in infrastructure and policy will likely sustain this positive trend.
